Meinert Hansen
June 18, 1958 - I was born in Montreal,
17 minutes after my twin brother, Gunnar. The names
are Danish.
Early 1960's - Copied some Superman comics, then discovered I could do it myself.
Couldn't stop drawing after that. Good thing my Dad worked in a cardboard box
factory - we had an endless supply of paper.
1973 - Made my first animated cartoon in Super 8. Got the filmmaking bug. Continued
making films with my brothers (I have a younger brother too, named Erik). Our
neighbors thought we were insane.
1975 - Went to college and studied communication arts. Almost got kicked out
for spending too much time making films and not enough time going to classes.
Learned everything I needed to know about film in those years. The biggest lesson
was how to make films with no budget, which I think is the best education for
filmmakers..
1981 - Left Concordia University's fine arts program- couldn't afford it. Tried
to make a living doing graphic design. Starved. Worked in bookstores. 30 percent
off on art books…yay!
1984 - Got my first job in animation. Spent the next 14 years in the animation
industry. Covered every aspect of the business, from layouts to directing.
During the animation days I got some freelance work doing concept art & storyboards
for visual effects.
1998 - I made a total break from animation and focused on visual effects, and
production art. I've been doing that ever since, as well as giving classes in
storyboarding and guest lecturing on occasion.

The name Fiction Science comes
from a childhood memory - when I thought that "science fiction" sounded
wrong. Maybe it was because I was a little dyslexic.
I thought that if the science was fictional, then you
would say it was a fiction science rather than a hard
science. It just stuck with me. |
